Self-piercing riveting technology is now the technology of choice for many OEMs in the automotive industry for joining aluminium components. Tata Steel is looking to identify and work with partners to develop riveting technologies to join the High Strength Steel (HSS) components of the future.
Self-piercing riveting technologies for aluminium applications are not new and have been around since the early 1990s, not just in the automotive industry but in other industries also. This approach has in many companies replaced the spot-welding joining technologies traditionally used. For steel, with its much higher strength for a given gauge, high speed riveting is a challenge and spot welding is still the most widely used technology. However, spot welding is slower than high speed riveting and joining dissimilar materials can also be a challenge.
However, the use of HSS has many advantages for OEMs, for example light-weighting and also increased crash performance and safety, and its use in future car programmes will increase considerably. As Tata Steel develops even higher strength steels then the challenge high speed joining for our customers across a number of sectors will become even greater. Tata Steel would like to explore existing technologies, or those in development, for the high speed joining of steel. Riveting is of particular interest but other approaches will be considered.
Ideally similar joining speeds as are achieveable with aluminium. However, it is recognised that this is a major challenge and slower speeds will be considered initially, ideally with a development route to achieve the higher speeds necessary.
High speed riveting of aluminium components is widely used across many industries, including automotive and aerospace and may be directly transferable to steel with some modifications. New approaches to high speed riveting will also be considered.
Theoretical ideas with no experimental support, funding requests for proof of concept.
