Siemens Healthineers are looking for an integrated technology to detect collisions of moving medical devices with their environment for realizing 3D tactile safety covers for medical products.



Siemens already uses 3D tactile sensitive covers which stop medical products if a collision occurs. This current integrated collision detection system offers not only safety, but high mobility for the imaging system itself and the clinical personnel.


We are now looking for cost-sensitive tactile 3D safety cover solution. The more mature the solution is the better.


Key Success Criteria

We are seeking partners that can provide:

  • The sensitive covers shall be  in 3D free-form (typical dimensions are 0.5 m² to 1.5m²) and have to be tactile all over the surface.
  • The sensor system shall be integrated beneath a steady and closed surface. The rigid surface of the cover can also serve as clamping protection.
  • The collision detection itself has to be tactile and material and geometry independent. This means we do not look for near field solutions. The sensor cover has to detect collisions with any kinds of object forms and materials (e.g. human being as well as dry wood).
  • Reliable and cost efficient production process for the solution. Knowledge of the production process for integrating the sensors into the cover and how to guarantee a high quality surface
  • In order that the 3D cover surface is easily cleanable and can be disinfected, it has to be of high quality and must be varnishable. 
  • Proven experience with tactile safety sensors and at best have already developed some kind of safety critical applications.
  • Optional functions of the sensors: Measurement of the force, local resolution (either as single or multi-touch). The latter functionality can be used to detect where a collision has taken place. The resolution for such a feature is about 10cmx10cm.


Possible Approaches

Any approach for producing a tactile safety cover is welcome.


Approaches not of interest

We are not interested in solutions which require lots of manual work for either processing the cover, sensors or the integration of both.
