Description

Siemens is seeking a design tool for three-phase chokes with distributed air gaps for power electronic applications. The main input parameters are load current, ripple current, fundamental and switching frequency. The tool shall propose suitable geometries and dimensions for the core, the windings and the resulting inductance.

 

Background

Some design tools are able to calculate the inductance of a three phase power choke. Currently no commercially available tool is known that is able to handle distributed air gaps for three phase power chokes. 

 

Key Success Criteria
  • The tool shall make a design proposal for the use case described above.
  • Work with main input parameters: load current, ripple current, fundamental and switching frequency.
  • The tool shall propose suitable geometries and dimensions for the core, the windings and the resulting inductance.
  • The important aspect is that the optimal number of distributed air gaps shall also be proposed by the tool. Optionally the number of distributed air gaps (>=1) in each leg shall be selectable in order to see the resulting effects.
  • The design output will include: the core and the winding losses as well as the resulting core and windings temperatures for certain cooling conditions (convection cooling, forced convection air or water cooling).
  • The tool shall be able to handle chokes in the power range from several kilowatts to megawatts and voltage levels above 100V to at least 1000V.
  • The inductances, losses as well as temperatures shall be calculated with accuracy better than 15%. 

 

 

Possible Approaches

Analytical based tool is preferred to reduce calculation time, but is not mandatory.
