Thermally Responsive Material Technology

Request Number N577959
Need details
Description

PepsiCo seeks containers or phase changing labels that can provide insulation by warming and cooling as needed.

Background

The fashion industry is incorporating phase change materials into cutting-edge garments, ones that can deliver insulation and ventilation in response to ambient environmental conditions to keep the wearer at a comfortable temperature. PepsiCo seeks innovative packaging or labeling technology that can provide similar thermal performance for consumer beverage containers.

Thermally responsive containers or labels will allow for more efficient transport of consumables across the globe, as well as benefiting consumers by keeping their favorite drinks as close to the ideal temperature as possible.

PepsiCo believes that advances in materials science mean that such adaptable containers or labels are now possible.

Conceptual approaches to this project are of interest provided there is a clear path to commercialization.

Key Success Criteria

A successful technology will

  • Provide the desired thermal properties for Carbonated Soft Drink (CSD) beverages in PET.
  • Be recyclable/ environmentally sustainable.
  • Be capable of running on standard off the shelf labeling equipment.
  • Delight the customer, in feel and touch.
  • Must be non-toxic.
  • Be cost-effective.

Additional desirable features:

  • Applicable to a wide variety of packaging formats (PET, glass, Al, etc.)
  • Relevant to broad beverage product portfolio (juices, tea, water, dairy, etc.)
  • Applicable to US and Global markets.
  • GRAS Approved.
  • Path to commercialization shorter than 2 years; respondents may indicate their required timeframe if longer than this.

Possible Approaches

PepsiCo is interested in all approaches capable of achieving the performance stated above.

Approaches not of interest
  • Foam labels (unless major advances have been made to performance and/or cost)

Preferred Collaboration types
  • To Be Negotiated

You must use the RESPONSE TEMPLATE form provided for the PepsiCo Gallery.

The completed form must be uploaded to your submission through the NineSights platform. Please contact phd@ninesigma.com if you need assistance. PepsiCo will not review proposals that do not include the required form. The information contained in your Response Template should inform PepsiCo about the performance your technology can achieve without divulging any information how that performance is achieved. PepsiCo encourages you to respond with enthusiasm and creativity, provided that the information shared remains technologically informative.

To submit your idea or proposal, please use the Respond Now button on the right of this page. Please note that only non-confidential information can be accepted. By submitting a response, you represent that the response does not contain and will not be deemed to contain any confidential information of any kind.

Your response should be a concise abstract/executive summary. The proposal should briefly describe the technical approach and provide information on technology performance, background and description of the responding team and their related experience. By submitting a response, you acknowledge that PepsiCo, in its sole discretion, may select or reject a response or any portion thereof. Individuals and organizations wishing to engage with PepsiCo must first submit their non-confidential response via the appropriate project page – PepsiCo will not respond to or accept proposals made outside the PepsiCo Gallery managed by NineSigma.
