A highly durable and high efficient bearing concept for high speed rotor of an electrical machine is sought.



IncWell's partner is interested in ball bearing technologies capable of robust, high speed performance.


A currently used ball bearing (with inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 52 mm and a width of 7mm) has a maximum speed of approximately 14,000 rpm. A bearing capable of operating at 30,000 to 50,000 rpm is of interest.


The technology must be capable of operating under the following conditions:

  • Lifetime: 3000h
  • Hours of operation at nominal speed: 1200 h 
  • Available design space (as for DIN 61808 ball bearing):
    • Inner diameter: 40mm
    • Outer diameter: 52mm 
    • Width: 7mm
  • Avg. axial load: 200N (helical gearing)
  • Max. axial load:1200N for 30h
  • Avg. radial load: 0N (neutral in operational condition)
  • Max. radial load (short): <100N (maneuvering)
  • Oil or grease lubrication for ball bearings
  • Operational temperature range: -40°C to 150°C



Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will meet the following performance:

  • High Durability (1000 h at nominal speed / total lifetime 3000h)
  • Compact design (comparable to 61808 design space)
  • Low drag losses, high efficiency (>99%)
  • Cost efficient
  • Max. weight (<0.04 kg)
  • Low initial breakaway torque (<0.1 Nm)
