Description

IncWell's partner seeks advancement in materials, designs or functionality for automotive springs.

 

Background

Helical springs have been used since the the 15th century. IncWell's partner is interested in advancements in materials science or industrial design capable of providing improvements to this centuries old technology.

 

Advantages of interest include:

  • alternative materials which enable:
    • weigh reduction
    • cost savings (either in material costs or production costs)
  • new designs
    • improvements over current steel springs
  • "smart" spring materials
    • integrated actuator functionality

Previous work has involved a trade-off between the strength of the spring and its flexibility. Additionally, for high-speed applications, a constant preload is crucial (heavier preloads result in increase operating temperatures).

 

Key Success Criteria

Successful spring performance:

  • Load cycle: 1 million cycles
  • Design volume: approximately 10 mm3
  • Stroke: 5
  • Operating temperature: -40°C to 150°C
  • Preload spring total area: 100 - 1000 Newton

 

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches include, but are not limited to:

  • plastic or composite spring material
  • smart springs actuated by thermal or electrical energy
