IncWell's partner seeks cutting-edge technology or materials capable of replacing potting in the production of electric motors.

 

Background

Potting is used to enhance the transfer of heat from the electric motor stator end winding to the cooling jacket. The heat transfer is accomplished by eliminating air pockets in the heat transfer path.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Unfortunately, potting is a slow and costly process. Additionally, the materials used tend to show relatively low thermal conductivity (~3W/mK) resulting from the low viscosity required for the filling process.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

IncWell's partner is interested in all potential alternatives to potting: from new potting materials with high thermal conductivity to technology that eliminates the need for potting, such as direct cooling methods or special designs. 

 

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Reduce process time with respect to standard potting process/material of an e-motor
  • Provide equivalent power density with respect to standard potting process/material
    • Approaches that provide increased power density are highly desirable
  • Be cost neutral to existing technology
    • Cost increases should be off-set by performance improvements

IncWell's partner is open to all approaches capable of achieving the desired performance.
