An object detection system is needed to prevent a collision between a fixed element and the moving object.

In an automotive environment, there exists a need for a collision detection system. The desired system must be capable of detecting an object with minimum diameter of 100mm before the fixed element is struck.  


Due to limitations imposed by location within the automotive environment and the complexity of the sensors involved, a hidden solution is especially difficult. Nuisance activations are not desired.


IncWell's partner seeks next generation collision detection systems.


Key Success Criteria
  • The fixed element surface
    • made of painted steel
    • has curvature to it
    • area is 1m x 1m 
  • Speed of moving object: ~1m/s
  • Contact detection limits:
    • Maximum distance for detection: 12cm of contact
    • Minimum distance for detection: within 5 cm - closer could result in false detections.  
  • Sensor system needs to be hidden and no larger than 20mm X 20mm.  
  • System can either be hidden behind 1.0mm steel or behind a plastic housing.
  • Target $15 per system
  • Minimum TRL 2
