Description

IncWell's partner seeks technology to embed lighting effects for the exterior of the vehicle that remain hidden until activation.

 

Background

With the advancement of vehicle accent lighting and electronic comfort features, there is a rising demand for “hidden until lit” lighting effects for the exterior of the vehicle.  One highly desired lighting effect is the ability to transmit light through a body color panel.  Previously investigated lighting solutions present multiple issues in achieving the desired effect in appearance and brightness.

 

The biggest challenge is to achieve localized desired lit appearances on large panels without splitting the panels or adding a secondary part with a bezel or feature line / gap.  Lighting through painted panels is a unique challenge due to the opaqueness of paint and potential light scattering in the substrate material causing fuzzy lighting appearances.

 

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will be capable of:

  • Minimum TRL 4-5
  • Visibility in daylight conditions
  • Being hidden until lit
  • Consistent Class A appearance
  • Withstanding OEM exterior performance specifications
  • Application on large exterior panels such as fascias with seamless integration (no bezels or feature lines)

 

Additional Criteria:

  • Automotive capable
  • Mature solutions are preferred; however, longer-term solutions with a clear path to realization will be considered 
  • Ability to match body color
  • Ability to display graphics through painted panel with crisp appearance
  • Daylight appearance / visibility is preferred, but accent lighting for nighttime appearance will also be reviewed and considered for other potential applications

Potential avenues for successful technology include:

  • Light transmissive paint
  • light transmissive polymers
  • laser technologies
  • LED of laser lighting technologies
  • printing technologies

 

Approaches not of interest
  • Treatments that show the lit area when not lit
  • A surface read through, non-body color capable solutions
  • Films are not of interest as they are difficult to apply on large complex surfaces
