Innovation in Canada’s forest sector offers a wide range of economic, social, and environmental benefits.
Created in 2010, the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program supports innovative, first-in-kind technologies at Canadian forest sector facilities to encourage industry transformation. Supporting and de-risking new technologies will enable broader adoption of advanced technologies and create associated benefits across the forest sector. To date, IFIT has supported 25 projects across Canada which has resulted in:
- Increased environmental performance (production of green electricity and renewable fuels, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, increased energy efficiency, carbon capture);
- Diversified markets with new, higher value products (new biomaterials, advanced building products and construction materials);
- Increased competitiveness and economic sustainability (jobs created, jobs secured, new revenues streams for companies, diversification of product portfolios)
The IFIT – NineSigma relationship seeks to transform the Canadian forest sector by accelerating the commercialization of innovative products and processes that have been established through collaboration between IFIT and Canadian forestry companies. IFIT projects have developed first-in-the-world and first-in-Canada technologies and products that can provide solutions and challenges for major global players. This open innovation gallery aims to foster new relationships by showcasing the innovative capabilities that have been established by IFIT supported companies and those seeking to further strengthen new products and markets through creative solutions and ventures.
