Description

Haier seeks sensor technologies that will allow an air conditioner to be controlled by hand or arm movements.

 

Background

Turning on and adjusting an air conditioner unit is commonly done through the use of a remote controller.  But it can be frustrating to locate the remote control unit, sometimes its batteries need to be replaced, and the unit can become confused with remotes for other devices (like televisions or cable boxes).  Haier seeks to identify motion sensor technology that will allow a user to control an air conditioner simply through the use of hand or arm gestures.  Preferred technologies will provide complete solutions and be able to discern between different movements to result in a rapid and appropriate response from the air conditioner.  

 

Haier prefers to work with partners that have existing technologies or approaches that can be applied to this specific application. Collaboration can involve technology licensing, product sourcing, proof of concept leading to joint development agreements and assistance with scale-up to manufacturing.

 

Preference will be given to technologies or approaches that currently have working prototypes that can undergo feasibility, validation or proof of concept over a 3-6 month period. Financial support for the proof of concept phase will be negotiated based on specific performance targets agreed between both parties. For selected collaborators Haier may provide access to samples, test equipment and testing facilities. Technologies will need to satisfy manufacturability, material cost and ease of use assessments to progress from the concept stage.

 

Key Success Criteria
Successful technologies will
  • Be able to recognize several distinct motions to be correlated with basic air conditioner functions, such as:
    • On/off
    • Temperature control
    • Fan speed
  • Have a recognition accuracy > 95%
  • Provide immediate response to the motion activation (< 1 second delay)
  • Function at a distance of up to 5 meters
  • Provide reliable service for 8-10 years
