Description

Haier seeks electronic nose technology to monitor food quality changes in refrigerators.

 

Background

Haier, a major manufacturer of refrigeration systems, seeks to develop electronic nose systems that can detect the spoilage of food within a refrigerator by monitoring the food odor changes continuously, in real time.

 

Food quality and its correlation with release of different volatiles is a complex topic.  Each kind of food emits distinctive volatile components that vary depending on the state of freshness.  By monitoring these different components, the changes in food quality can be tracked.  Because this is a complicated field, Haier is only interested in solution providers that are already experienced in developing sensors for food quality monitoring.

 

This project, formerly entitled "Odor Sensors", has been refined by Haier to focus on electronic nose technology and its implementation into refrigerators. 

 

Key Success Criteria

Successful responses will:

  • Monitor and assess the qualitative freshness stage of different types of fruit and vegetables
  • Continuously analyze data and provide consumers with updates regarding food quality
  • Work robustly in the presence of multiple common fruit and vegetables
  • Operate within the environment of the refrigeration chamber of a domestic refrigerator (temperature 0~10°C, RH: 30~95%)
  • Have a service life of at least 5-10 years
  • Be immediately demonstrable

Approaches not of interest

The following technologies or approaches are not of interest:

  • Solutions that are not safe for use within a domestic refrigerator
  • Solutions that require too much intervention by the consumer

Items to be submitted

Haier prefers to work with partners that have existing technologies or approaches that can be applied to this specific application. Collaboration can involve technology licensing, product sourcing, proof of concept leading to joint development agreements and assistance with scale-up to manufacturing.

 

Preference will be given to technologies or approaches that currently have working prototypes that can undergo feasibility, validation or proof of concept over a 3-6 month period. Financial support for the proof of concept phase will be negotiated based on specific performance targets agreed between both parties. For selected collaborators Haier may provide access to samples, test equipment and testing facilities. Technologies will need to satisfy manufacturability, material cost and ease of use assessments to progress from the concept stage.
