Description

Haier seeks partners with thermochromic materials that change from high to low light transmission at temperatures above 80°C.

Background

Haier is a manufacturer of solar water heating systems. During summer these systems have efficient collection of solar radiation. With low water usage this can result in overheating of the water, which creates a risk of contact with hot water, can accelerate ageing of system components and may reduce the lifetime and reliability of the system.

 

Haier Group Open Innovation Center invites proposals from companies (large or small and medium enterprises), inventors or researchers with thermochromic materials that could be used on the surface of solar collectors to effectively block light transmission at temperatures above 80°C, whilst allowing effective light capture at lower water temperatures.

 

Key Success Criteria

Successful materials will:

  • Have high light transmittance at temperatures below 80°C
  • Change colour at temperatures at or above 80°C to provide a coating with low light transmittance
  • Revert to high light transmittance at temperatures below 80°C
  • Be stable at temperatures of 100°C
  • Have good weather and sunlight stability with decay of performance or material of less than 2% per year

The following technologies or approaches are not of interest:

  • Materials that cannot be made into coatings of finals.
  • Materials or coating procedures that cannot easily be used in mass production

Items to be submitted

Haier prefers to work with partners that have demonstrated expertise in the areas of interest and the ability to rapidly provide proof-of-concept data and prototyping of solutions (3-6 months). Collaboration can involve supply agreements, technology licensing or joint development agreements.

 

Financial support for testing and development will be negotiated based on specific performance targets agreed between both parties. For selected collaborators Haier may provide access to current designs, samples, test equipment and testing facilities. Technologies will need to satisfy manufacturability, material cost and ease of use assessments to progress from the concept stage.
