Description

Siemens Healthineers is looking for a solution to equip surfaces of large cover parts (2m²) either with a color neutral or white electrostatic discharging (ESD) surface.

Background

Standard static dissipative surface coatings and/or materials exhibit an inherent color which is not white.  In the requested case the preferred color is the color white (eg. RAL 9010,   RAL 9003).

Key success Criteria

We are seeking partners that can provide a solution meeting the following criteria:

  • Electric surface resistance 105 ≤ R ≤ 1011 Ω
  • Surface coating shall be either colored or a clear coat:
    • Color: RAL 9003 or RAL 9010
    • Clear coat shall not impair impression of white color (eg. RAL 9010, RAL 9003)
    • Gloss level: glossy, semi-matt, matt
  • No fading of the ESD-effectiveness over time
  • Resistance to active agent groups: Aldehydes, alkylamines, quaternary compounds, pyridine derivatives, guanidine derivatives, chlorine derivatives, peroxide compounds, organic acids, phenol derivatives, alcohols, benzene, common household dishwashing liquids - detergent substances
  • As scratch resistant as possible: No visible scratches at minimum 4 N with the tip vertically on the surface (hardness tester type 318 Erichsen)
  • Resistance to irradiation: SUN test acc. to the following description: The exposure takes place for three hours without a filter (uncoated plastics for 30 hours) in a wavelength of 270nm-800nm with an intensity of 765W/m² ± 10%. The permitted color change compared with the surface that is not irradiated is dE* ≤ 1.0 (+0.2 measuring instrument tolerance).
  • Resistance to UV C radiation acc. to the following description: The test for paints as well as uncoated plastics takes place during 3-hour radiation with short-wave UV light (wavelength around 250nm) and an intensity of 21 W/m² ± 10%. The permitted color change compared with the surface that is not irradiated is dE* ≤ 1.0 (+0.2 measuring instrument tolerance).
  • Adhesion of the coating on the substrate acc. to ISO 2409 (Gt 1)
  • Biocompatible acc. to ISO 10993-1: Categorisation acc. to Table A1, potential contact areas category A
  • Attachment of self-adhesive labels on the surface shall be possible


The solution shall be applicable to large plastic parts (2m²). The plastic material may be ABS, PC, PS, PUR. The solution must be marketable worldwide.

The solution shall be applicable to series production: 100 to 1000 pieces per year. Approximately 5 m² - 10 m² per piece.

Possible Approaches

Siemens Healthineers is open to all solutions that meet the key success criteria and are applicable to plastic parts.
