Description

Haier seeks partners to develop novel technologies for the rapid freezing or thawing or irregularly shaped foods.

Background

Fast freezing or thawing is typically achieved using a plate such as an aluminum plate or a plate containing heat pipes. Foods such as fish or sliced meat that have a consistent thickness and high surface area to volume ratio work well with these flat plates due to the large contact area between the food with the plate.

However, these flat plates are less suitable for fast thawing or freezing of irregular shaped foods such as chicken or ribs.

Haier Group Open Innovation Center invites proposals from companies (large or small and medium enterprises), inventors or researchers with concept or prototype solutions that allow fast freezing or thawing of irregular shaped foods.

Key success Criteria

Successful responses will:

  • Freeze or thaw irregular shaped food like chicken and ribs
  • Freeze or thaw at least 3 times faster than those without rapid freezing plates
  • Be non-toxic and can contact with food directly
  • Be easy to use, and no complex food packaging and treatment are required
  • Have a service life of at least 5- 10 years

Possible approaches include:

  • Flexible, deformable, high efficiency thermal conducting product that can contact with food directly
  • Deformable cold storage product
Approaches not of Interest

The following technologies or approaches are not of interest:

  • Approaches that cannot be accommodated within the standard dimensions of refrigerators
  • Approaches that adversely impact food quality such as taste, colour, or spoilage

Items to be submitted

Haier prefers to work with partners that have demonstrated expertise in the areas of interest and the ability to rapidly provide proof-of-concept data and prototyping of solutions (3-6 months). Collaboration can involve supply agreements, technology licensing, design optimization, commissioning and testing of prototypes, joint development agreements.

Financial support for testing and development will be negotiated based on specific performance targets agreed between both parties. For selected collaborators Haier may provide access to current designs, samples, test equipment and testing facilities. Technologies will need to satisfy manufacturability, material cost and ease of use assessments to progress from the concept stage.
