Self-compaction or Densification of Dry Granular Solids
RFP Description
NineSigma, representing a global supplier of blended ceramics materials invites proposals for self-compacting granular solids.

Additive manufacture of objects and structures has many modes.  One of these modes uses dry granular materials that must be compacted or densified before final bonding by thermal or other means.  Both manual and mechanized approaches to compaction have their drawbacks from the point of view of labor and capital costs as well as exposure issues when force is applied to the pre-compacted solid.


New approaches must maintain the flowability of dry granular materials during normal storage and handling, and yet efficiently respond to a small stimulus to self-compact.  The task is further complicated by heterogeneous particle size distribution, variations in morphology and surface texture.


Present dry granular materials have a density of X and mechanical means increase that to 3.0-4.0 g/cc.

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Increase density of free-flowing dry granular materials compared to a loose fill density
  • Allow packaging in bags (55lbs. to 3300lb ‘supersacks’)
  • Resists compaction by vibration experienced during normal transport and handling
  • Flows freely to fill 3-d cavity
  • Produces a compacted 3-d solid with less than 20% porosity.
  • Preference for minimal to no particle segregation



Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Additives in the form of granules to be admixed
  • Additives that can coat some or all of existing granular compositions
  • Modifications to material morphology
  • Optimized particle size distribution
  • Additives that are removable and/or act by heating
  • Piezoelectric materials the generate a compressive or vibrational force when current or radio frequencies are applied
  • Modified delivery system that applies potential to solids and ground to interior of 3-d form and additives to support this as required.




Approaches not of Interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Additives that would emit toxic vapors during blending, storage or upon heating
  • Zn, Cd or Pb containing additives
  • Materials applied after 3-d form is created.
  • Wet granular material compositions

Criteria for moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

Results from Phase 1 Testing validate proposal claims and meetin glong term program objectives.
