RFP Title

 

Water-based  Acrylic Polymer Improve Flexibility and Dirt Pickup Resistance
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a major chemical manufacturer, seeks a technology to improve flexibility and stain resistance of a water-based acrylic polymer owned by the client. Proposals for a technology currently at a lab level which, in principle, will likely be applied to mass production are also widely welcome.

Key Success Criteria

Prerequisites: Acrylic polymer owned by the client

  • Structure: Water-based (meth)acrylic polymer
    • “Water-based” means water dispersion polymer.
    • Ionicity: Anionic
  • Molecular weight: 10,000 to 2,000,000 or more
  • Glass-transition temperature: 0 – 30°C
  • Flexibility: Elongation rate 100% (thickness: 200 μm, measurement temperature: 20°C)
  • Hardness/stress: 20 N/mm2 (thickness: 200 μm, measurement temperature: 20°C)

 

 Requirements of the target technology

  • Flexibility: Elongation rate 200% or more (thickness: 200 μm, measurement temperature: 20°C)
  • Should have stain or dirt pickup resistance
    • Should be free of stains after being exposed outdoors for over 10 years. (Especially, should be able to control rain streak stains from contaminants, such as gas pollutant)
  • Should have Weatherability

 

The above requirements regarding stain resistance are extremely difficult to achieve; therefore, proposals for a technology that has not met them yet but will likely do so through additional development are also welcome.

 

 

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to, the following. The client anticipates a wide range of proposals to establish this technology.

  • Approach using an additive
    • Use of an additive in (meta)acrylic polymer owned by the client which can improve its flexibility and other properties.
  • Approach using a monomer for copolymerization
    • Copolymerization with the (meta)acrylic monomer owned by the client which can help fulfill the abovementioned requirements.

 

 

Approaches Not of Interest

The following approach is not of interest:

  • A technology at a concept level for which a sample cannot be provided

 

 

Background

The client has been conducting R&D activities for (meta)acrylic polymers with long-term antifouling properties and a high elongation rate that can be used as a paint for outdoor buildings. However, the company has yet to realize a potential technology that can meet the ultimate requirements (especially flexibility and stain resistance).

 

Therefore, the client has issued this open request in order to further accelerate the technology development and establish a technology as soon as possible.

    • Data on water resistance (Water absorption etc.)
  • Views on scaling up (As the ultimate goal for this material, the client anticipates the production scale to be 1,000 tons or so a year.)
  • Conditions for sample testing (amount of sample that can be provided, cost, period, necessity of an NDA, etc.)
  • Current challenges and future plans to fulfill the client’s requirements
  • Track records (e.g. additional information supporting the R&D capabilities, such as research papers and patents)
  • Organization overview

 

 

Notes on Response

Proposal shall have clear points and should not include confidential information. Supplemental files may be submitted in addition to the proposal.

 

 

Anticipated Project Process

After reviewing submitted proposals, the client possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.

 

 

Response evaluation

The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
  • Respondents’ capability and related experiences
