Natural “Green” Sources of Light Scattering Materials
RFP Description
NineSigma, representing a global consumer goods company is seeking proposals for natural light scattering materials.

Inspired by biomimetics and the prevalence of nature to solve complex scientific problems, Ninesigmas client is looking for green materials which can address their applications incorporating light scattering / reflective surfaces.


Materials that are traditionally used in commercial applications for achieving light-scattering properties are particles and manufactured in synthetic or semi-synthetic processes.


Ninesigmas’ client is searching for green materials / ingredients which can provide the same optical effect but is from a natural, biodegradable and/or sustainable source.


Areas of interest for the material solution include – but not limited to -  the following


  • Food Industry
  • Packaging
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Paint
  • Electronics


The target would be a bio-sourced light scattering material which has a refractive index from 1.4 to 1.55.  


The ideal solution would require short development cycle or be off the shelf.


Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1 – Proposal review / Product testing

Identify suppliers that are able to provide material solutions, which meet the performance criteria.

Phase 2 – Commercial scaleup

Feasibility of supply


Key Success Criteria

The successful material should have some of the following

  • Be a green material
  • Biodegradable, natural, sustainable source
  • Ability to diffuse reflection of visible light i.e. scatter light in all directions
  • Material solutions, e.g. particles, polymers, monomers etc. Non-toxic solution


Approaches not of Interest

The following ingredients are not of interest:

  • Non-green sourced materials
  • Particles less than 100 nm and greater than 10 µm in diameter
  • Siloxanes
  • TiOx, ZrOx, boron nitride (BN)
  • Synthetic materials


Items to be Submitted

  • Background on company/organization
  • Overview of proposed technical approach, including technical feasibility and ingredient physical characteristics
  • Proposed plan and deliverables
