Phase 1 - Proof of technical concept (6 months)

Phase 2 - efforts may vary depending on the background and capabilities of the respondent or responding organization. Potential scenarios may include long-term feasibility testing, pilot scale-up and testing or joint development efforts in the case of novel or improved technologies.



Both near-term and long-term funding is available in accordance with the proposed solution.

Treatment of High Concentrate Wastewater Streams
RFP Description
NineSigma, representing a Global Food Processing client, invites proposals for novel system designs for the treatment of industrial wastewater streams with high fat and grease content.

The scope and efficacy of industrial water treatment operations depends on the material composition (i.e. “strength”) of the wastewater stream. High strength streams – such as those found in the food industry, chemicals manufacturing, oil and gas, mining and other industries – are notoriously difficult to manage due to high concentrations of particulates, residual chemicals, and other byproducts of processing. In the case of NineSigma’s food processing client, this wastewater includes all of the above, in addition to significant levels of fat, oil and grease.


Current treatment protocols are limited by high capital expense, operational inefficiency, gaps in regulatory compliance, and high waste disposal costs. The client seeks to develop, license or acquire novel solutions from partners across academia, research and industry that can efficiently resolve highly concentrated waste streams to meet environmental standards. Top solution providers may have the opportunity to foster and support long-term initiatives in collaboration with the client.



Key Success Criteria

The successful respondent technology will address all of the following:

  • Operate with influent wastewater streams having the following characteristics:
    • Biological Oxygen Demand: >15,000 mg/L
    • Total Suspended Solids: >7,900 mg/L
    • Fat, Oil, and Grease: >1800 mg/L
  • Resolve the contaminated stream down to environmentally acceptable levels for efflux
    • Biological Oxygen Demand: =/<300 mg/L
    • Total Suspended Solids: =/<300 mg/L
    • Fats, Oil, and Grease: =/<100 mg/L
  • Be compatible with or adaptable to hydraulic loading >200,000 gallons / day at industrial scale
    • Continuous operation up to 24 hours / day and 7 days / week
  • Beneficially re-use all byproducts generated OR create no byproducts.

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Approaches incompatible with high grease content
  • Microbiological solutions that are not supported by proof of concept at industrial scale

You represent an organization with novel technology or designs that should provide a solution, but that requires further research and development to ready it for transfer to commercial use.
