Biodegradable Material Technology for Food Packaging
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a multibillion-dollar food manufacturer, seeks biodegradable material technologies which can be applied to food packaging.

The client widely anticipates proposals not only with commercialized technology, but also with research-level technology if biodegradable conditions and biodegradability have already been confirmed.

Key Success Criteria

The key requirements for the sought technology are as follows. Proposals that have not met all of them but likely will are also welcome.

  • Safety: The material should be safe and hygienic for food purposes.
  • Workability: The material should be able to be formed into films or foams, or molded such as bottles and caps
  • Color: Transparent material is preferable.
  • Others
    • It is preferable that the degree of biodegradation can be adjusted depending on additives and manufacturing conditions.
    • It is preferable that the material can be mass-produced at a low cost.
    • It is preferable that the proposed material can be printed with ink and so forth.
    • It is preferable that the proposed material can be laminated with other materials.

  • Material that can be degraded not only in landfills in the ground but also in the ocean
  • Material with workability, mechanical properties and optical properties equivalent to those of conventional packaging materials
  • Material that enables dramatic cost reduction, compared to conventional materials, through scaling up

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Approach in which biodegradation requires special conditions, such as high temperature and high pressure
  • Approach in which, in principle, cost reduction is unrealistic owing to such reasons as use of expensive materials

Microplastics floating in the ocean, which have recently emerged as a social issue, are causing a movement to ban plastics to widely spread in food packaging as well as other various industries.

As a food manufacturer, the client is engaged in technology development, striving to resolve such environmental problems by replacing conventional packaging materials for their food products with biodegradable materials, as one of the technologies to reduce plastic use.

Nevertheless, the client has yet to discover, within its existing network, a material that has the biodegradability required and enables cost reduction. Therefore, the client has issued this open request globally to further accelerate technological development by exploring potential biodegradable material technologies that can solve the problems.

Response evaluation

The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
  • Respondents’ capability and related experiences


Anticipated Project Process

After reviewing submitted proposals, the client possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
