BMW is seeking new quick and efficient methods of presenting welding fixtures in a car manufacturing line. The method must present 5 or more fixtures (1.5m x 1m x 1m) and be able to switch between each fixture in approximately 6 seconds.

BMW would like to add more flexibility to their car manufacturing line. In the current setup, BMW use an automated production line where fixtures house components and aid robots in welding car body parts together. Several car models are produced on the same line, therefor many fixtures need to be presented. The sequence of car models on the line alternates so fixtures need to change in rapid succession.

The current system utilizes 3 different fixtures and can switch between each in less than 6 seconds using a trunnion. The fixtures need to be reachable within the working area for an operator to place components.

Key success Criteria

Fixture size

  • Maximum space of 4.3 x 6.1 x 8.0 m (width x depth x height)
  • Accommodate at least 5 different components with the minimal dimensions of 1.5 x 1 x 1m (width x depth x height)
  • Transport components with a weight up to 1t
  • Maximum height 4.5 m or 8 m
  • Provide a physical separation of worker and robot
  • Be ergonomic for workers regarding the availability, sound and safety
  • Be scalable and adaptable to other factories with less or more space
  • Be easy to maintain for personnel with a high technical availability
  • Offer an interface where the components can be handed securely and accurately to the robot (accuracy: +- 2.5 mm in all directions)
  • Include a working space for at least 1 employee

Switching time

  • Need below 16 sec for a complete change of components

Possible Approaches

BMW is open to all solutions that meet the criteria.
