Improved Efficiency for Heat Pump Water Heaters in Cold Weather

Haier seeks technology that will improve the efficiency of heat pump water heaters when ambient temperatures are <-25°C.



Since heat pump water heaters essentially transfer heat from the air to water, their efficiency drops significantly during cold weather months.  Haier seeks technology that can reliably improve the performance of heat pump water heaters when the ambient temperatures fall below -25°C.

Preference will be given to technologies or approaches that currently have working prototypes that can undergo feasibility, validation or proof of concept over a 3-6 month period. Financial support for the proof of concept phase will be negotiated based on specific performance targets agreed between both parties. For selected collaborators Haier may provide access to samples, test equipment and testing facilities. Technologies will need to satisfy manufacturability, material cost and ease of use assessments to progress from the concept stage.


Haier prefers to work with partners that have existing technologies or approaches that can be applied to this specific application. Collaboration can involve technology licensing, product sourcing, proof of concept leading to joint development & assistance with scale-up to manufacturing.


Key success Criteria

Successful responses will:

  • Be able to produce hot water (65°C) when ambient temperatures are <-25°C
  • Have a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of at least 2.0 when the ambient temperature is under -20°C
  • Have a COP of at least 3.4 when the ambient temperature is over 20°C
