Description

Haier seeks partners with mature odor elimination technologies for use in a refrigerator.

 

Background
Strong smelling or spoiled foods can affect the taste and aroma of other items stored in the same refrigerator. Additionally, it can be off-putting for a consumer to open the refrigerator and be assailed by such unpleasant odors.
 
Haier would like to identify mature odor elimination approaches that can incorporated with little or no development work into their existing refrigerator lines.  Typical odors arise from Allium plants (sulfide), fish (trimethylamine), fruits such as durian (ester, ketones, and sulfide); and from food spoilage (methane, sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and methyl amine).
 
Conceptual or early stage solutions are not of interest.
Key success Criteria

Successful responses will:

  • Eliminate odors by over 90%
  • Operate within a domestic refrigerator: Temperature -18 – 10°C, Humidity 40 - 90%, Volume 200 – 500L, Power Supply 5/12V DC
  • Be safe for use within a residential refrigerator and create no secondary pollutants
  • Have a working lifetime of over 10 years
  • Be ready to demonstrate
Possible Approaches

Haier is open to all readily demonstrable approaches capable of acheiving the performance described above.

Approaches not of Interest
The following technologies or approaches are not of interest:
  • Standard physical adsorption technologies such as activated carbon or molecular sieves.
  • Technologies requiring high concentrations of ozone
  • Masking of undesirable odors with other scents
