The position indicator is used by line service workers to determine the position of the voltage regulator.
The current design is over 30 years old and we are exploring the opportunities for a redesign. We are not experiencing any problems with our current design, it is functional however it is outdated. Please see the link for a description of what a Voltage Regulator is and how it performs.
The indicator device serves the following functions and requirements:
A visual aid for verifying the current tap position of the regulator including neutral tap position
A visual aid for identifying the maximum and minimum position the regulator has been in over a period of time until it is manually reset (drag hand reset feature, done via an electrical signal from control panel).
The visual aids from points 1 and 2 must be readable from a minimum distance of 25 ft at day and night.
A feature to set the regulation range (max and min) of the regulator, by percentages (5%, 6.25%, 7.5%, 8.75%, and 10%), two little knobs on either side of the regulator (c.v. second picture)
The indicator also must have environmentally rated housing with UV protection characteristics as it is to be exposed to outdoor ambient conditions.
A mechanical interface exists between regulator tap changer and position indicator via flex shaft
Size of the position indicator: approx. 8 inches in diameter
Open to all approaches that meet the success criteria.
