Description

Fazer is seeking sustainable packaging alternatives for their ready-made food products. The material should be plastic free or a fully recyclable plastic, able to work with low/high moisture content products and provide shelf life stability over a range of 1 week to 3 months.

Solutions that meet the need criteria may be invited to Fazer to evaluate and develop the technology.

Background

Fazer is releasing a new brand of plant-based ready meals by 2020. In an effort to support a circular economy, Fazer would like to use recyclable sustainable materials. Several current packaging options are unsuitable, such as black rigid plastic trays, layered plastics, coloured and opaque plastics, etc. These cannot be easily recyclable and as a result, can end up in a landfill. In general, if a plastic-based packaging solution is proposed, the plastics made from renewable sources are highly prioritized.

The plant-based meals will be available as chilled or frozen ready meals. These meals will be dry products (burgers, nuggets, etc.) or products with a higher moisture content (meal with a sauce).

Fazer would like to find suppliers capable of large volumes or organizations with early stage prototypes and novel packaging solutions. Ideally, the packaging will be compatible with their current process which uses an industrial filling line, but Fazer is also open to investing in the development of novel solutions.

Key success Criteria

The materials should meet the following criteria:

Suitable for food use (food safety and regulations)

AND

Sustainable plastic-free solution

OR

Plastic derived from renewable sources

OR

Fully recyclable plastic such as: not from virgin material, no multilayer, LDPE, PP, HDPE

The material should be able to work with:

Low moisture content foods such as dried, frozen

OR

High moisture content foods such as meals with multiple ingredients, including a sauce, etc.

The material should work with the following shelf life:

A product that is frozen >3 months

OR

A product that is chilled <1 week

The material properties should achieve:

No oxygen entering into the packaging

No moisture exiting or entering the packaging

Can be heated in microwave and oven

Can withstand a temperature range of -18 degrees C to +5 degrees C

Should plastic be part of the solution, it needs to be made from renewable sources

Compatible with the current filling process
