RFP Title

Small and Silent Electric Drive System
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Global Consumer Device Manufacturer, is looking for a small electrical drive system that is silent (45 dB) and able to deliver a minimum torque of 0.3 Nm at 7 to 15 rpm. The drive needs to be able to run clockwise and anti-clockwise.

NineSigma’s client has developed a novel consumer device. Their current drive system fulfills the power requirements except for the noise produced by the built-in gearing mechanism that reduces the base drive rpm to the required 7 to 15 rpm. The measured noise level is between 52 and 55 dB and that is considered too high for the intended application. The client wants to identify a similar dimensioned drive system that gives the same 7 to 15 rpm, can deliver 0.3 Nm torque and at a noise level of 45 dB or less.

Key Success Criteria

The successful device will have the following technical specifications:

  • Noise level target (running under maximum load): 45 dB (the quieter the better) measured at 20cm distance
  • Drive needs to be able to rotate in both directions (clockwise and anti-clockwise)
  • Power output:
    • Range of rotational speed under load: 7 to 15 rpm
    • Torque Values
      • Minimum torque to be delivered: 0.3 Nm under maximum load
      • Normal load when in use is 0.2 Nm
  • Drive dimensions (see figure):
    • Maximum diameter: 24 mm
    • Maximum length: 59 mm
      • Shaft length is included in the max. length of drive – 59 mm,
      • No shaft diameter limit as long as the drive diameter is max. 24 mm.
      • There is freedom in terms of shaft type i.e. D-type or any other groove on the shaft for rigid mounting. Only a circular shaft without grooves cannot be used
  • Energy available: 3.3 Wh (rechargeable Li-ion battery)
    • System run time: able to operate for 3 hrs before recharging
  • Expected lifetime of drive: minimum of 1,000 hrs total run time
  • Preferably a commercially available solution with no or limited development work
  • Price target of $8.50/unit at 5,000 units/year (purchase volume of 1 batch)
  • CE and FCC certified

  • The yearly quantities are not yet fixed and will be higher depending on the commercial success of intended device (possibility for several batches per year)
  • Client is open to solutions that improve on the targeted noise limits; e.g. 32 dB instead of 45 dB. In that case the accepted pricing is higher (maximum $15/unit)
Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Improved electric motors
  • Drive systems with silent gearing design
  • Drive systems including noise dampening
  • Cost effective stepper motors
Approaches not of Interest
  • Systems that significantly exceed the cost targets of this Request
  • Solutions that require long-term development (e.g. more than 3-4 months to reach commercial use)
  • Technology requiring additional devices, such as active noise control technology
Items to be Submitted

Your response should not contain any confidential information and address the following:

  • Features of the proposed system that will achieve the stated aims
  • Maturity and production readiness of the proposed solution
  • Availability of drive systems for evaluation
  • Cost projections
  • Short overview of the company or team behind the proposal and expertise in the fields or related fields of interest

The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for evaluation. During the selection process, the client may execute non-disclosure agreements (NDA) with selected respondent(s), seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific targets or potential opportunities.

Client will evaluate all responses and choose those of greatest interest for direct discussions that could lead to contractual engagement or other commercial arrangements with selected respondent.
