RFP Description

NineSigma, representing Toyota Industries Corporation, seeks a partner to develop a hydrogen storage system capable of operating at low pressure, for industrial trucks. We are particularly looking for a system that is capable of storing and releasing hydrogen at high speed and in a stable manner at a pressure of <1 MPa.


Hydrogen fuel has promise as renewable energy that produces no carbon dioxide when burned. The Client looks to developing a hydrogen storage system capable of operating at low pressure, to promote the widespread use of hydrogen-fueled infrastructures, thereby helping build a sustainable society. While research on hydrogen storage and release technologies is done around the world, it remains extremely challenging to achieve a stable supply and practical speed of hydrogen in such a system at a pressure of 1 MPa or lower. With an aim to be among the first to establish such technology through collaborative research with a partner who possesses innovative technology, the Client has decided to make this RFP to call for such a partner.

Key Success Criteria

A hydrogen storage system to aim for
An in-vehicle hydrogen storing and releasing system capable of operating at low pressure (<1 MPa) that can be applied to industrial trucks such as forklifts:

  • Purity of hydrogen supplied: ≥99.97%
  • Hydrogen releasing rate: Consumes approx. 1–1.5 kg of hydrogen for 4 hours
  • Hydrogen supplied to: Fuel cell unit
  • Dimensions: Approx. 30 cm x 60 cm x 50 cm
  • Weight: No constraints

Technology requirements
The Client seeks systems, design technologies, or hydrogen storage materials that meet the criteria above. It is not necessary for all requirements to be met at this point; proposals are welcome if there is a good chance of meeting them in additional 1–2 years of further development.

Possible Approaches

The Client expects technologies such as the following approaches, but is open to others:

  • Hydrogen storage systems
    • Approaches making use of external energy (e.g. light, electric field)
    • Approaches making use of chemical reactions
    • Design of the structure of a hydrogen storage material
Approaches not of Interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Technology that generates large amounts of heat when storage/release of hydrogen
Items to be Submitted

 Please include the following items in your proposal:

  • Characteristics, principle, and uniqueness of proposed technology
  • Development stage: performance verified at a lab level, technology currently being established, or implemented for practical use
  • Current performance:
    • Operating pressure range
    • Hydrogen storage capacity
    • Hydrogen supply speed
    • Applicable laws, regulations, or standards (if any)
    • Durability (Number of cycles for hydrogen storage and release)
  • Current challenges and future development plans
  • Potential for scale-up
  • Past results (e.g. research papers, patents)



Proposal shall have clear points and should not include confidential information. Supplemental files may be submitted in addition to the proposal.


The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
  • Respondents’ capability and related experiences



    After the submission due date, the client will review all submitted proposals. NineSigma will send the review results to each proposer 6-8 weeks after the due date. The client possibly asks clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.
    The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
