On-Demand Fluid Delivery System in Hydrogel
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Global Leader in medical devices, invites proposals for technologies that can create an on-demand fluid delivery system in hydrogel materials.


On-demand pumping in hydrogel is an enabling technology for various biomedical applications that need controlled fluid delivery in hydrogel devices. The RFP sponsor is seeking innovations that allows on-demand fluid delivery in hydrogel.

Key Success Criteria

The technology must be able to:

  • Create on-demand pumping or fluid delivery system in soft hydrogel material with modulus less than 3MPa.
  • Pump water-like fluid with physiological pH and salt concentration in fully hydrated hydrogel.
  • Create pumping or fluid delivery system within a hydrogel film less than 300 µm thick.
  • Pump fluid in the direction perpendicular to (not across) the thickness of the hydrogel.


Preferred features:

  • Create pumping or fluid delivery system in a non-planer hydrogel film
  • Create pumping or fluid delivery system with biocompatible materials
  • Withstand heat sterilization in aqueous solution
  • Be used for multiple activation of on-demand fluid delivery system
Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • External energy driven shape changing polymer hydrogels
  • Stimuli responsive shape changing polymer hydrogels with external triggers
  • Material matrix approaches, such as molecular inclusions or tissue engineering innovations
  • Manufacturing technology to create microchannels and microdevices in hydrogels
  • Approaches from on-demand Drug Delivery applications with external triggers are of interest to this RFP

Proposed technologies that can address specific parts of this challenge, even if the proposed approach cannot solve the challenge as stated here, will also be considered for this RFP.

The following approach is not of interest:

  • Active electrical circuit and/or battery within the hydrogel to power the delivery system

  • Availability of technical data
  • Technical maturity of the approach (concept, reduced to practice, prototype, ready to commercialize, ready to implement, commercialized)
  • Pathway to commercial scale including timing, estimated budget, and capacity for manufacture
  • Position on intellectual property including patent references
  • Desired relationship with sponsor
  • Team description and related experience
