Highly Stretchable, Restorable, and Heat-resistant Film
NineSigma, representing a major materials manufacturer, seeks a partner to develop a film that hasexcellent stretchability and restorability under high-temperature condition as well as heat resistance. Given the difficulty of combining high stretchability and restorability with heat resistance in conventional technologies, we are looking particularly for suggestions on new polymer materials, composites, and laminate films, as well as performance improvement based on superior molding/forming techniques.
NineSigma's Client, a global materials manufacturer, develops and manufactures high-performance materials and films. In recent years, in a part of semiconductor applications, there is large demand for materials with outstanding stretchability, restorability, and heat-resistance. The Client is also engaged in the development of the target materials, however, the stretchability and restorability of a material is in trade off with its heat resistance, and the film that is sought after has yet to be developed. Meanwhile, the development of high-performance materials is important in a number of industrial fields such as automobile, aerospace, and medicine, which are the fields where technological breakthroughs are constantly necessary. The Client has therefore decided to make this RFP to further accelerate the development of their research and development endeavors.
Key Success Criteria
Film products to aim for
The Client seeks to develop a film that meets the following criteria:
Stretchability and restorability under high-temperature condition
Elongation: ≥800% at 170°C
Restorability: ≥90% at 170°C
Does not deform for 10 minutes or longer when heated to 180°C with no pressure put on
A film with a thickness of 30–150 μm, width of approx. 1,500 mm, and length of approx. 1,000 m
The Client seeks film materials or forming/molding technology that help meet the above-listed performance criteria
For film materials:
Elastomer with heat-resistant
Lamination of a highly flexible/restorable material and heat-resistant material
Composites containing fillers
Highly stretchable and restorable base resin materials
Fillers and additives that enhance heat resistance
For forming/molding technology
Optimization of temperature conditions during extrusion molding
Multilayer molding technology
It is not necessary for all requirements to be met at this point; proposals are welcome if there is a good chance of meeting them through further development within the next year or so. While it is preferable that a proposed material is already in the form of a film, proposals of fillers, additives or molding/forming techniques alone are also welcome.
Able to provide a few A4-sized sheets of film samples, or to undertake film molding/forming on commission
A few kg of samples will be required for a proposal on fillers or additives alone

Notes on Response
Proposal shall have clear points and should not include confidential information. Supplemental files may be submitted in addition to the proposal.
The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.
Overall scientific and technical merit
Approach to proof of concept or performance
Economic potential of concept
Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
Potential for proprietary position
Respondents’ capability and related experiences
Anticipated Project Process
After the submission due date, the client will review all submitted proposals. NineSigma will send the review results to each proposer 6-8 weeks after the due date. The client possibly asks clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.
The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
