ICL Innovation seeks a cost effective synergist as an alternative to antimony trioxide (ATO) to deliver halogen in the gas phase from plastic composites during combustion.
Manufacturers seeking to make their products flame retardant add Antimony Trioxide (ATO) to halogen flame retardants to improve performance of the flame retardant to reduce the propagation of radical reactions which promote combustion. While ATO is an effective synergist for halogen flame retardants, it is subject to price fluctuation and availability. ICL-Innovation seeks to develop alternatives to ATO which offer similar performance and improved cost and availability.
Key success Criteria
Cost of flame retardant system should be ≤ cost when using ATO as synergist with halogens
Ingredient inclusion in plastic formulation should maintain, or improve, physical and mechanical properties of plastic
Preference for ingredient/s to be abundantly available
Solution should offer sustainability and low carbon footprint
Approaches not of Interest
ICL Innovation is not interested in responses which offer approaches which are already commercialized and available on the market.

Items to be submitted
ICL Innovation welcomes responses from academic or research institutions or other organizations who are interested in developing innovative technologies and sharing intellectual property in licensing. Approaches with demonstrated feasibility are preferred, but early stage approaches with sound scientific concepts are also welcome. Technologies aligned with business interest will enjoy full funding until implemented on an industrial scale.
