RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global trillion-yen sales manufacturer, seeks development partners for a new fan(s) that can improve rotor efficiency, noise reduction, and enhanced safety of urban air mobility (UAM).

Key Success Criteria

Features of UAM to be developed

  • Diameter of rotor: around 0.5-4 m
  • Number of rotors: multiple
  • Number of blades: multiple
  • Rotation speed: around 300-2000 rpm
  • Thrust (per rotor): approx. 300-3600 N

 

Fan requirements

  • Fans that can achieve UAM described above:
    • Prototype version (scale model)
      • Diameter of rotor: around 0.5 m
      • Efficiency (Figure of Merit): ≥ 0.75
      • Sound pressure level: approx. 60~70 dB at a height of 150 m
      • Capable of evaluation of safety and reliability for practical use level
    • Practical use level
      • Diameter of rotor: around 0.5-4 m
      • Efficiency (Figure of Merit): ≥ 0.75
      • Sound pressure level: approx. 60~70 dB at a height of 150 m

It is not necessary to meet all of the above requirements at this time, and we welcome proposals if there is a prospect of achieving them through additional development in about two years.

 

Proposer requirements

  • Capable of meeting the above prototype requirements within 2 years
    • Capability for practical use level and mass production are not an issue at present
Possible Approaches

Possible approaches

The client anticipate that ring-fans are promising solution, but, any other proposals for new rotor mechanisms that can solve problems are welcomed.

From the viewpoint of safety and reliability, we also welcome proposals for reducing the risk of harm to the surroundings of the UAM due to rotor breakage or human contact.

Items to be Submitted

Background

The client has been developing UAM that can be boarded by people using drone technology. One of the keys to practical UAM is the development of high-performance fans with high-efficiency, low-noise, lightweight, and high-reliability.

Although the client has been trying various studies and efforts, a fan that can meet the requirements has not been developed yet.

Meanwhile, rotorcrafts such as drone and multicopter have become popular in recent years, which has accordingly spread related technology development widely throughout the world. The client has therefore decided to recruit this technology in order to further accelerate research and development.

 

Notes on Response

Proposal shall have clear points and should not include confidential information. Supplemental files may be submitted in addition to the proposal.

 

Response evaluation

The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
  • Respondents’ capability and related experiences

 

Anticipated Project Process

After the submission due date, the client will review all submitted proposals. NineSigma will send the review results to each proposer 6-8 weeks after the due date. The client possibly asks clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
