Technologies for 2-D and 3-D Projections
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a leading consumer goods manufacturer, invites proposals for technologies that allow 2-D and 3-D images/movies to be viewed without requiring a screen or display (e.g. holography). 

Background

In a connected world, where the internet and displays continue to gain in importance and quality, soon people will be able to visit the entire world without physically having to leave their homes. In order to create an optimal experience, display manufacturers are putting a lot of effort into creating devices that represent reality as well as possible. However, for our client, ‘just displaying’ is not good enough. 

Hence, NineSigma is seeking solutions that project 2-D and 3-D graphics without the need for an actual display/wall/screen in order to create an even more realistic projection. In addition, they would like to realize this 3-D visualization/holographic representation without the need for any additional equipment such as special spectacles. Preferably, the visibility of the projection will not be limited to one, single angle but can be watched from different positions. 

The objective of this RFP is to find technologies that allow 2-D and 3-D projections without the need for an actual display or other additional equipment to be worn by the viewer. 

ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES 

Phase 1 – Shortlist of concepts/solutions in Q3 2018 

Phase 2a – Proof of concept Q4 2018- Q1 2019 

Phase 2b – Further development and optimization of the prototype 2019- 2025 

Phase 3 – Develop into a commercial product before 2028 

Key Success Criteria

The successful solution has to: 

  • Allow 2-D and 3-D projections without the need for a display or screen 
  • Allow freedom of movement for watching the projection, preferably being visible from various angles 
  • Can be used in temperatures between -30°C and +80°C 
  • Create a stable projection, even when moving the device around 
  • Be at the ‘proof-of-concept’ stage 
Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to: 

  • Holographic methods and technologies 
  • Augmented reality technologies 
  • Conventional or non-conventional optical approaches 
  • Alternative 3-D projection systems used in concerts or movies 

Our client is open to proof-of-concepts that could lead to the ultimate holographic experience within a 10 year time frame.
