Non-destructive Measurement for Welded Parts of Copper Wires
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a major auto parts manufacturer (“Client”), seeks technologies that can non-destructively measure welding penetration depth in a rectangular copper wire. It is desirable that the proposed technology can detect defects associated with welding (e.g., void, pinhole, through hole) in addition to the penetration depth. Although proposals that can be applied to online processes are preferable, offline measurement technology is also welcome.

Details of welded part to be measured

  • Object to be welded: Rectangular copper wire
    • Material: Copper
    • Size: 1.5-4.0 mm wide × 3.5-6.0 mm long × 1.5-4.0 mm thick
  • Condition of welded part of the rectangular copper wire
    • Welding method: Melt the base copper by laser welding, then join rectangular copper wires
    • Number of rectangular copper wires to be joined: Approx. 90-150
    • The welds are concentrated on multiple points (approx. 90-150 points in total) as seen in the figure below.              Penetration cross-sectional area measured by destructive inspection: Approx. 2-4 mm2 (1-2 mm wide × 2-4 mm long)
    • Weld defects
      • Exist inside or on surface of object
      • Defect type: e.g., void, pinhole, through hole
      • Size: Approx. 0.1-1 mm wide

Technology Requirements for final goal

Capability of non-destructive measurement of the welding penetration depth and defects (inside and on surface) in welded parts that are concentrated on multiple points in components of the welded rectangular copper wires

  • Capability of measurement in the air with no foreign matter adhesion
  • Measurement resolution
    • Penetration depth: (depth direction) ±0.1 mm
    • Defect: (horizontal direction) ±0.05 mm
  • Measurement time
    • Online: ≤1 min for all welded parts (90-150 points)
    • Offline:  ≤1 h for all welded parts (90-150 points)

  • X-ray inspection that can measure multiple joint parts
  • Laser measurement using a galvano scanner
  • Weld shape diagnostic imaging for high-speed processing
  • Eddy current testing
  • Infrared thermography method
  • Radiation thermometry of molten metal

Items to be Submitted


The Client manufactures welded rectangular copper wires above mentioned for automotive parts. They need accurate measurements of welding penetration depth and defects of inside or on the surface of welded objects in order to ensure the higher quality of components.

The Client  evaluated various inspection method and found challenges as follows: Ultrasonic testing requires water immersion inspection while X-rays do not pass through parts joined with many rectangular copper wires in X-ray inspection. Moreover, in general inspection, high precision and high-speed non-destructive inspection for the inside welded zone of multi-point dense spots is difficult.

Meanwhile, non-destructive testing is used in various fields, and it seems that there must be promising technologies for solving these problems. Therefore, the Client decided to recruit proposals to identify promising technologies as soon as possible for practical use.

The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
  • Respondents’ capability and related experiences


Anticipated Project Process

After the submission due date, the client will review all submitted proposals. NineSigma will send the review results to each proposer 6-8 weeks after the due date. The client possibly asks clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
