RHI Magnesita dedicates itself to continuously advance sustainable production of refractory products. Since most primary raw materials by its nature emit CO2 during production, RHI Magnesita plans to massively increase the rate of used secondary raw materials in refractory products to lower the carbon footprint and to conserve natural resources. However, due to the diversity of product types used in linings of individual aggregates, an efficient technology or solution, which allows for a fast sorting of recyclable materials, needs to be established.
The retrieved material, after the breakout of the linings, features soiled surfaces, and single bricks are likely to be partially fragmented. As these products find their application in extreme harsh environments, facing temperatures higher 1200 °C, corrosive media, mechanical stresses and thermo shocks, suitable identification techniques are limited. Marking of the brick’s cold face (T < 900 °C) would be a possible attempt to improve sorting results.
The used product types mainly differ in their chemistry, more precise in their content of MgO, Al2O3, SiO2 and C . Currently, manual sorting mainly depends on the experience of the employee, who differentiates on base of strength needed for cleavage, fracture surface appearance and color.
