Lucozade Ribena Suntory is seeking solutions to increase the recyclability of coloured PET bottles. These could be methods of separating the opaque PET bottles from recycling streams, alternative methods of colouring the plastic to improve recycling, alternative recyclable materials for coloured bottles, or other solutions that we haven’t considered. Lucozade Ribena Suntory are open to early stage ideas and solutions that are more mature.

Lucozade Ribena Suntory is working towards ensuring that 100% of Ribena’s packaging is easily recyclable, but faces significant recycling challenges with the coloured plastic used for Ribena Minis.

Ribena Minis is the no added sugar children’s format which consists of a hinged cap, block coloured plastic bottle, but current UK recycling streams are unable to recycle opaque coloured PET bottles back to RPET bottles. The bottle can currently be recycled, just not back into colourless RPET bottles.

Key success Criteria

Ingredients, Materials, Technologies, Processes which improve the recycling of opaque coloured (PET) bottles

Possible Approaches
  • Ability to separate the opaque coloured PET bottles from potential recycling streams.
  • Novel ways of recycling coloured PET bottles

Lucozade Ribena Suntory is open to early stage ideas and solutions that are more mature.
