RFP Description
NineSigma, on behalf of the Manufacturer of Internationally Distributed Prestige Consumer Devices invites proposals for thin transparent display technology that can be engineered into future product designs.

Inclusion of electronic, digital displays is becoming nearly universal as the utility for users of industrial and consumer equipment and is becoming increasingly present even in low technology environments. Temperature indicators, temperature history indicators, and package integrity are among the common applications.

Many types of technologies are available, from passive LCDs, to backlit LCDs, LEDS, light pipes, that provide information in spatial, alphanumeric and pictorial form. Several applications (head up displays as only one example of dozens), require the display equipment/technology to be transparent unless information is being reported. A particularly useful form of such displays can be formed into plastic components of larger systems. Either a single piece that can be included in a casting or attaching and covering a display are approaches under consideration.



Key Success Criteria
The successful display technology will:
  • Provide at least one fully opaque or illuminated state
    • Optionally be essentially invisible and transparent in its inactive state
    • Multiple illuminated states are optional
  • Require between 3.7 and 12 Volts DC
  • Withstand temperatures from -0 C to 120 C
  • Tolerate temperatures of 500 F during for 1 minute in over molding operation, depending on integration of the technology
  • Be no more than 2.0 mm thick
  • If a projection based, project to a flat surface (heads up display)
    • Main projection module to be limited to 35mm x 35mm x 7mm
    • Must have a protected or guard or solid transmission path to+ the display area
  • Cost no more than $25/unit in lots of 100,000

Display may be either self-contained in a single module or projected



Possible Approaches
Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
  • Mold-in approaches, where the device is fully contained in a later formed transparent plastic unit and electrically connected to a separate unit
  • Mold-in approaches using light pipes, where the electronics and light sources are kept in a separate unit and only the light pipe is molded into the transparent plastic unit
  • Overlaid approaches, where a transparent display is assembled on the surface of a transparent plastic unit and further covered by a transparent protective barrier if required.
  • Application of simplified head up display technology



Approaches not of Interest
The following approaches are not of interest:
  • Incandescent minibulbs

  • IP policy, exclusive license in domain etc.

Criteria for moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

  • Moving to Phase 2 will require mutual agreement that construction of a prototype is feasible and that production economic targets are likely to be met.



Responses from companies (small to large), academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, or inventors are welcome. For example:


  • You represent a company with light-pipe display technology that can be embedded in cast materials
  • You represent a company with older or current generation head up display technology with low costs and restricted features
  • You represent an organization with technology concepts completely outside of those envisioned here
