Development Partner for high-accuracy, low-cost, contactless electric meter
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a major engineering company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, seeks potential partners to develop a high-accuracy, low-cost, contactless electric meter to measure current and/or voltage.

We widely welcome proposals with whichever commercialized technology or elemental technology such as electric elements, if the requirements can be potentially met through additional development.

Key Success Criteria

Key Success Criteria

In this open request, contactless measurement refers to measuring current or voltage without contacting an electric wire. It is acceptable to contact the wire coating.

 

The client anticipates proposals that meet or will likely meet the key criteria for measuring technology as per [1] or [2] below.

 

[1] For instrumentation signals

  • Target object: Electric wire of approximately AWG16-14 (Φ1.3-1.6 mm) in size
  • Measurement items: Should be able to measure current in the following range. It is preferable that voltage can also be measured.
    • Current range: 4–20 mA DC
    • Voltage range: 1–5 V DC
  • Accuracy: +/-1% or less at full scale
  • Output: Should be able to be read easily at low cost. For example, analog output at 1–5 V DC. Details to be discussed.
  • Waterproof and dustproof performance: Preferably equivalent to IP53.
  • Range of operating temperature: 5–45˚C

 

[2] For digital signals

  • Target object: Electric wire of approximately AWG16-a14 (Φ1.3-1.6 mm) in size
  • Measurement items: Should be able to detect ON-OFF of current or voltage in the following range:
    • Current range: 0–50 mA DC
    • Voltage range: 0–24 V DC
  • Output: Should be able to be read easily at low cost. Details to be discussed.
  • Waterproof and dustproof performance: Preferably equivalent to IP53.
  • Operating temperature: 5–45˚C
  • Other: It is preferable that the ON-OFF threshold can be easily set.
Items to be Submitted

Background

The client, a major engineering company, promotes technology development that can add more value with IoT technologies for existing facilities or plants which they design, develop, and operate.

Current and voltage are most important to be measured among the measurement items for their instruments, however the client has not yet discovered technologies from their network that fulfill the requirements.

Therefore, the client has issued this open request globally to further accelerate development jointly with potential partners.

 

Notes on Response

Proposal shall have clear points and should not include confidential information. Supplemental files may be submitted in addition to the proposal.

 

Response evaluation

The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
  • Respondents’ capability and related experiences

 

Anticipated Project Process

After reviewing submitted proposals, the client possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
