Torque Measurement for High-Speed Rotating Shaft
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a major manufacturer of industrial equipment, invites proposals for technologies and approaches that could be used for measuring the static torque being applied to a shaft rotating at high speed.

Background

NineSigma’s client is a manufacturer of motorized industrial equipment. In order to monitor the performance of the equipment whilst in use, our client monitors the torque that is acting upon a rotating shaft which is being driven at high speed.

The current performance monitoring arrangement is quite complex, in total 9 different sensors are required, which has an impact on the reliability, cost and ease of maintenance for the equipment. Our client is seeking a solution to measure the static torque which would lead to a clear simplification of the whole performance monitoring instrumentation.

Although strain gauges have traditionally been used for industrial static and dynamic torque measurement, their instrumentation and complex signal transmission technique is making them so far unsuitable for the intended serially produced equipment.

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Meet the following key technical criteria:
    • Suitable for steel shafts, various diameters in range 20-120mm
    • Technology is able to operate in an oily environment
    • Shaft rotational speed: Up to 65,000 rpm
    • Suitable for static torque measurement within a range of 5-9000 Nm
    • Be sensitive to measure static torques with levels between 1/34 to 1/16 of the maximal yield strength of typical shaft materials
    • Repeatability and long-term stability: <0.5%
    • Capable of continuous operation up to 150°C
  • Be durable and offer a long service life appropriate for continuous use in industrial applications
    • Lifetime: 50,000 cumulative hours of operation
    • Service interval: 15,000 cumulative hours of operation
  • Be quick and cost effective for incorporation into production equipment
    • Solutions which are already commercially available, or are close to commercialization, are strongly preferred
  • Be suitable for incorporation without major modification to the rotating parts
    • A simple and compact solution would be much easier to incorporate
  • A solution that combines torque and speed measurement would be of interest

 

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel sensors and sensing techniques:
    • Optical
    • Magnetic
    • Inductive
    • Surface Acoustic Wave
  • Strain gauge techniques (that overcome the previously identified limitations)
Approaches not of Interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Proposals where there is no evidence provided that the key technical criteria will be met
  • Solutions which require machining or re-design of the rotating shaft
    • Etching of the shaft in order to create surface features, which does not substantially affect the mechanical properties and balance of the shaft, would be considered
  • Proposals where proposed solution is immature, where samples cannot be supplied or there is no demonstration facility
  • Solutions based on strain gauges which do not show a fundamentally novel approach compared with existing solutions which are already on the market
  • Proposals to measure dynamic torque only

Your response should address the following:

  • Non-confidential description of proposed technology and working principle for static torque measurement
  • Technical specification and test results
    • If possible, include data which shows sensitivity and repeatability in static torque measurement
  • Technical maturity of the approach (concept, prototype, ready to commercialize, commercialized)
  • Availability of samples for our client to test and/or demonstration facilities that are available
  • Details about the company/organization which is submitting the proposal
  • Details of any IP which applies
  • Any information about possible cost of the solution would be very useful, but is not essential
