Technology for Analyzing Aromatic Content in Heavy Fuel Oil

Neste, the largest producer of renewable fuels, is seeking technologies/devices which can rapidly analyze and determine the aromatics content in heavy fuel oils in their conventional fossil fuel product line.


Neste is world’s largest producer of renewable fuels, with our unique Neste Renewables product family offering a truly viable low-carbon premium-quality alternative for many fossil fuels. Today more than half of Neste's business is focused on renewable products such as road traffic fuels.
Next to renewable products, Neste’s product range also covers conventional fossil fuels, such as light fuel oils and heavy fuel oils.

This need focuses on the heavy fuel oils which are developed to meet the needs of industrial heating, heating plants or for heating greenhouses.
Currently, aromatics content is measure by external laboratories with the following procedure: EC (2016/C 357/04) Ch 27 Annex A Procedure 1.
Neste would like to find an alternative to this approach to be able to perform the analyses more rapidly and more reliably at their own site.

Neste is looking for a technology/device that allows them to rapidly determine the aromatic levels in their heavy fuel oils.

Key success Criteria

The technology should allow:

  • Determine the wt% of aromatics in the heavy fuels
  • Repeatability and reproducibility of the measurements varies less than 10% 
  • Is quicker than existing (within 24 hours of sampling)
  • Analysis applies work safety regulations

Ideally, the proposed technology/methodology:

  • Can be automated
  • Does not require any pre-treatment of the sample (e.g. separation or extraction)

  • Automated analyzers
  • UV fluorescence technologies
  • Elemental analyzers
  • Sniffing Station
  • Laser induced spectroscopy
  • Optical sensing methods
  • Any other technology that meets multiple key requirements

  • Technologies which are not safe
  • External lab tests
