Electrically Conductive Materials for Coating Fine Powders
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Global Materials Science Company, invites proposals for electrically conductive materials for use in nano-scale applications.


Electrically conductive materials have a variety of applications ranging from electromagnetic shielding and electrostatic discharge to semiconductors and energy storage applications. However, these same materials are constrained by secondary properties (poor heat resistance, proneness to mechanical failure, etc.) that limit their functionality in extreme environments or high volume usage scenarios.


NineSigma’s client seeks proposals for electrically conductive materials that can be used to enhance base materials via micro-/nano-scale coatings or encapsulations. Ideal technologies will be robust enough to handle high mechanical and thermal stresses while remaining electrochemically inert.



Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Be electrically conductive
  • Be applicable at particle sizes from 0.1-100 micron
  • Be permeable to small ions
  • Be mechanically robust
    • Able to withstand heat treatments up to 200 °C
    • Able to withstand volume expansions of up to 4x

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Materials engineering solutions
  • Novel material applications
    • Encapsulation technologies
    • Self-healing materials
    • Carbon nanotubes
    • Inorganic materials (metal oxides, etc.)
    • Polymer solutions
  • Computational methods


NineSigma’s client will consider partial solutions for collaborative development opportunities.



Approaches not of interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Computational methods that are not also supported by additional capabilities in materials engineering, testing or validation.
  • Solutions with high electrochemical reactivity

    • Nature of proposed material (if applicable)
    • Application method (if applicable)
    • Working principle or knowledge base to support your approach
    • Availability of technical data
    • Technology maturity (concept, prototype, ready to commercialize, commercialized)
  • Pathway to industrial scale including timing, estimated budget, and capacity for manufacture
  • Estimated cost of technology (if available)
  • Position on intellectual property including patent references
  • Desired relationship with sponsor
  • Team description and related experience


How Proposals are Evaluated

  • Our client will use the information you provide to judge whether they should pursue more in-depth discussions, negotiations, or other arrangements directly with you. This initial evaluation requires about two months.
  • NineSigma will notify respondents if our client selected them for progression or not. If they were not selected, they may be able to receive feedback directly from the organization as to why they were not selected.
  • If selected for progression, the next step would be a conversation either with NineSigma or directly with the requesting organization to answer any outstanding questions.
  • If both parties wish to proceed, the requesting organization may initiate a contract such as a confidentiality agreement for further detailed discussion, a face-to-face meeting, or a submission of samples for evaluation.
  • The final step would be a contract establishing an official business relationship. This could include a supply agreement, licensing, a research contract, or a joint development agreement.
