Corrosion-Resistant, Antifouling Thermal Coatings
RFP Description

NineSigma, on behalf a major global oil and gas company invites proposals for coatings that offer corrosion resistance, antifouling, and thermal conductivity properties.


NineSigma’s client relies on water-cooled heat exchangers to cool various industrial processes which must operate with long service intervals.  It is necessary to protect surfaces in the heat exchanger and associated piping against damage from corrosion or fouling while maintaining or enabling heat transfer performance.



Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1 – Proof of concept

  • Client reviews/evaluates data and/or information from perspective vendor on technology
  • Depending upon the above statement, Client evaluates coating performance on client-supplied parts or coupons


Phase 2 – Engineering development

  • Optimize formulation, processing, and performance
  • Conduct extensive testing


Criteria for Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

Client will consider for advancement an approach that meets performance criteria with acceptable economics and pathway to commercialization.


Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Preferably offer all three of the following:
    • Resistance to corrosion
    • Resistance to fouling
    • Low thermal resistance as a combination of coating thickness and coating thermal conductivity 
  • Be compatible with steel surfaces
  • Be effective with fresh water, chemically treated fresh water, or salt water
  • Be durable for at least 5 years, preferably 10 years
  • Ideally offer easy application that:
    • Requires minimal surface preparation
    • Uses high-pressure spray equipment
    • Preferably meets compliance requirements of the Southern California Air Quality Management District


NineSigma’s client prefers approaches that are beyond concept phase.

Items to be submitted

Your response should address the following:

  • Non-confidential description of proposed technology and working principle
  • Availability of demonstrable technical data including adhesion, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, fouling resistance, solvent resistance, and durability
  • Technical maturity of the approach (concept, reduced to practice, prototype, ready to commercialize, ready to implement, commercialized)
  • Pathway to commercial scale including timing, estimated budget, and capacity for manufacture
  • Position on intellectual property including patent references
  • Desired relationship with sponsor
  • Team description and related experience
