RFP Title
Design for Expandable and Contractable Mechanical Structure
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing Terumo Corporation, seeks a design for cylindrical-shaped mechanical structure expandable and contractable by four times.

Background

Participation from both individuals and organizations are welcomed such as those with creative design idea or design experiences in medical devices or any other applications requiring similar design concept like aerospace, military, etc.

Terumo Corporation, a client of NineSigma, is engaged in development and manufacturing of medical devices. The client has pursued a mechanism capable of housing a cylindrical structure with an outer diameter of 16 mm in a compact case with an inner diameter of 4 mm for its new product under development.

Terumo Corporation has continuously made efforts to realize the mechanism. However, the client has decided to carry out this open call with the aim of applying technologies of foldable metallic components under development for other applications such as aerospace or military, as well as individual ideas of unique design concept to the development of new product.

Key Success Criteria

Product to be developed with proposed design

  • Application: Medical device
  • Use environment: To be used under the following conditions
    • Liquid to go through outside and inside the cylindrical component
    • The cylindrical component to be continuously subjected to external pressure of about 200 mmHg for approx. a week

Anticipated mechanical structure design

A cylindrical-shaped mechanical structure expandable and contractable by four times along radial direction (see the diagram)

  • Structure in the expanded state
    • Shape: Cylindrical (partially concaved)
    • Size:
      • Max. outer diameter: 16 mm
      • Min. inner diameter: 7 mm
      • Inner radius of concaved surface: 3 mm
      • Length: 55 mm
    • Structure: Internally hollow
  • Structure in the contracted state
    • Size: Can be housed in a cylindrical case with an inner diameter of 4 mm
  • Should yield excellent repeatability in expansion and contraction, whose change can be controlled at any timing
  • Should be made of biocompatible components and/or materials
  • Materials under assumption are rigid metal-based body coated with flexible resin
    • Metal: Stainless steel, NiTi, beta titanium alloys, carbon fiber, etc.
    • Resin: Polyurethane, PVC, PET, silicone, nylon, etc.

Anticipated capability/experience to proposers

  • Good track record and achievement pertaining to this request
  • Capability to conduct the prototyping, in addition to proposing a design

Possible Approaches

Anticipated approaches include, but are not limited to the following mechanical structure designs:

  • Foldable structure employing “origami” engineering
  • Expandable / contractable structure employing biological engineering
  • Transformative structure based on shape morphing

Anticipated Respondents

Anticipated respondents, either individuals or organizations, include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Individuals or organizations having ideas with unique features and novelty
  • Companies or research institutes having engineering knowledge related to structure design potentially satisfying the requirements

Preferred Collaboration types
  • Joint Development
  • Technology Licensing
Items to be submitted

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

0. Request for proposals: Proposer shall submit a proposal using the response template within the specified period of time.

1. Selection and evaluation of proposals: The client performs a primary screening of submitted proposals. The client may ask clarifying questions or have a direct discussion with proposer(s) to select candidate(s) for a proof of concept by prototyping.

2. Proof of concept by preliminary prototyping: The client requests the selected candidate(s) to conduct preliminary prototyping for the proof of concept whose finance is to be covered by the client, leading to a design partner selection.

Policies associated with intellectual property rights of the adopted structure design(s) shall be determined through consultation.

Items to be Included in the Proposal

Responses will use the Proposal Template which is linked to the “attachments” shown at the bottom of this page and include the following items:

  • Overview of organization
    • Experience and associated past achievements
    • Uniqueness and strong points
    • Actual application in the past achievement and expansion/contraction factors
    • Condition for trial production (cost, delivery time, etc.)
  • Request concerning the policy of patents and intellectual property rights
