Track and Trace Solutions
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Global Supply Chain and Logistics Company, invites proposals describing technology enabling the tracking of valuable assets and products within the supply chain.

Background

In our increasingly connected world, there is an ever-growing desire to tap into the “Internet of Things” and to collect, analyze and leverage as much data as possible.  The supply chain logistics industry is a very complex industry and is well suited to leverage data in real time.  Being able to track valuable goods and products with increased speed and accuracy as they are transported, stored and sold has great value.  NineSigma’s client is actively funding the development and implementation of tracking solutions for use in the global supply chain.

Our client has millions of valuable assets that move throughout the supply chain and they are seeking solutions that can facilitate the tracking of these assets across the supply chain.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Tracking assets while inside a facility
    • Assets may be surrounded by densely packed inventory and surrounded by metal or other solid materials that might inhibit communications
  • Tracking assets outside a facility
    • Assets may be exposed to weather and stationary for long periods of time
  • Tracking the movement of assets while being transported
    • Assets are commonly used in rail cars, carriers, refrigerated units and other enclosed transportation vehicles

While some technologies may enable both indoor and outdoor tracking, our client is also interested in partial solutions that can enable tracking for limited use cases.

Key Success Criteria

Successful solutions will:

  • Enable the tracking of a variety assets in the supply chain including:
    • Assets in transport for long distances
    • Assets in transport for short distances
    • Asset movement within a building

The client is also interested in solutions that can provide environmental information via sensors in addition to tracking.

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Global Positioning Sensors (GPS)
  • Cellular radio connections
  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi
  • Sensor and connection bundles able to report environmental information (temperature, humidity, pressure, impact, etc.) in addition to tracking

Preferred Collaboration types
  • Joint Development
  • Contract Research
  • Contract Analysis and Testing
  • Technology Licensing
  • Technology Acquisition
  • Consulting
  • Supply Agreement
  • To Be Negotiated
Items to be submitted

To respond, please make sure you are registered in NineSights, as it will prompt you to log in. Then, use the Response options at the top or bottom of the page. You may submit supplemental files in addition to your completed response form.

Appropriate responses will use the response form and address the following:

  • Non-confidential description of proposed tracking technology or approach including:

    • Description of the hardware used for tracking including: size/weight, power requirements (source, battery life, reusability), device lifespan and durability, ability to be attached to different types of materials, and any existing certifications
      • Any limitations (performance in harsh environments, location accuracy, scalability, testing)
    • Description of the infrastructure required for implementation and data capture (portals, readers, network carriers etc.)
    • Description of software requirements and compatibility with standard platforms
    • Ability to collect environmental data in addition to tracking capabilities
    • Estimation of both cost per unit and cost of related infrastructure (including initial investment and recurring costs)
    • Ability and capacity to manufacture
    • Description of any related sourcing and service models (i.e., Are the units available for purchase or rent? Can the units be repaired?)
  • Technical maturity of your solution (concept, prototype, ready to commercialize, commercialized)
  • Description of intellectual property associated with the solution
  • Team description and related experience

APPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO THIS REQUEST

Responses from companies (small to large), academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, or inventors are welcome. For example:

You represent a company that has demonstrated a commercially available solution…

You represent a university research department that demonstrated a proof of concept…

Etc.
