RFP Title
Novel Routes to Isostearic Acid
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing A Global Chemical Corporation, invites proposals describing processes or chemistries to facilitate the conversion of varied mixtures of unsaturated fatty acids into isostearic acid.

Fatty acid feedstocks can be transformed into a variety of high value specialty chemicals that are used in a variety of end products, such as adhesives, paving materials, roofing materials, tires, fuel components, lubricants, inks, and personal care products. As a highly stable liquid fatty acid, isostearic acid is used as a precursor for heat stable lubricant components and as a key ingredient in cosmetics and other personal care products.

NineSigma’s client utilizes more than 40,000 tons of fatty acids per year in the production of a variety of specialized chemical products and intermediates. They are seeking direct and efficient routes of producing isostearic acid from a mixture of monounsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic acid) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as linoleic acid) for eventual use in both industrial and cosmetic grade applications.

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Provide a route (chemistries, catalysts, processes) from unsaturated fatty acids to isostearic acid that is:
    • Direct
    • Efficient (> 50% yield)
    • Scalable for manufacturing large quantities
    • Able to minimize dimerized byproducts
    • Cost effective

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Methathesis
  • Additions reactions (with formaldehyde, for example)
  • Epoxidation
  • Hydroalkylation
  • Isomerization over clays (such as bentonites and zeolites)

Preferred Collaboration types
Items to be submitted

To respond, please make sure you are registered in NineSights, as it will prompt you to log in. Then, use the Response options at the top or bottom of the page. You may submit supplemental files in addition to your completed response form.

Appropriate responses will use the response form and address the following:

  • Non-confidential description of proposed technology including descriptions of:
    • Yield efficiency
    • Scalability
    • Any byproducts (including dimerization)
    • Resulting color and sulfur content
    • Resulting product grade (industrial, cosmetic, etc.)
    • Estimated costs associated with process (equipment, catalysts, etc.)
  • Technical maturity of the approach (concept, prototype, ready to commercialize, commercialized)
  • Team description and related experience

Responses from companies (small to large), consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, or inventors are welcome.  For example:

You represent a company that has demonstrated a proof of concept…

You represent a university research department that has a bench-scale demonstration, and…
