Antimicrobial Hand Soap without Active Antimicrobial Agents
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global consumer products manufacturer, invites proposals for technology or ingredients to formulate an antimicrobial hand soap without incorporating antimicrobial active ingredients.


Regulators and the consumer market are scrutinizing antimicrobial active ingredients, such as triclosan, in hand soap. However, the need to reduce microbial content on hands remains important to health, particularly in the hospital environment. NineSigma’s client seeks solutions to help wash microbes away.


Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1 – Proof of concept

• Laboratory demonstration of efficacy


Phase 2 – Product development

• Formulation into hand soap and testing in health care personal hand wash study1


Criteria for Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

Client will consider for advancement an approach that meets performance criteria with an acceptable path for formulation in hand soap.

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

• Reduce impact of microbial content on skin during hand washing, without using antimicrobial active agents, by—but not limited to—one or more of the following:

o Enhance removal of microbial content

o Prevent reattachment of microbes to skin

o Reduce adhesion of microbes to skin

o Prevent biofilm formation on skin

• Be safe for topical use on skin, with little or no irritation

• Use ingredients suitable for formulation in soap

o Be compatible with other ingredients in soap

o Contribute minimal impact on product odor or appearance

• Be cost effective at commercial scale


Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

• Improved surfactant performance

• Technology that prevents biofilm formation or adhesion on skin

• Additives such as grit

• Specialty solvents


Approaches not of interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

• Another antimicrobial active agent

• Substances classified as a drug
