RFP Title
Robust Ductile Materials That Form a Watertight Seal
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Global Industrial Products Manufacturer, invites proposals for strong, flexible materials that can create long-lasting, watertight seals over metals, ceramics and polymers.

Background

In the client’s application, a three-dimensional, metallic barrier is fitted over joints of dissimilar base materials to prevent influx or migration of moisture and environmental contaminants. The physical structure of these base materials is highly variable across the range of end uses. As such, the barrier material itself must be flexible and ductile enough to conform tightly to the final structure, yet durable enough to withstand a high degree of physical and environmental stress.

At present, the material source is insufficient to meet the client’s high standard for performance and durability. The current application may involve outdoors exposures upwards of 50 years. Alternative material solutions are necessary to compete with ongoing innovations in the field. A number of options have been tested for efficacy (aluminum, polymer alloys, engineered silicone, etc.), yet none have exhibited the desired combination of characteristics and cost effectiveness at production volumes. The client acknowledges that solutions may exist within industries external to their own and is actively seeking partners across industry, academia and consulting to develop or optimize materials to this application.

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1 – Proof of technical concept and feasibility for commercial scale-up.

Further project phases will be focused on commercial development and depend on the nature, maturity and availability of the proposed material solution.

Criteria for Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

  • Material samples with technical data
  • Plan for development, optimization and scale-up to manufacturing at commercial volumes

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Conform to the complex contours of a rigid base material
  • Prevent moisture migration from the environment to the underlying base material

Additionally, the proposed technology should address one or more of the following:

  • Adherence to the rigid substrate similar to lead or rubber
  • Durability
    • Resist cracking and tearing upon bending and forming
    • Performance characteristics similar to aluminum or lead
  • Environmental resistance
  • Temperatures from -30F to >180F
  • Humidity from 0-100%
  • UV and ozone
  • Oxidation or rusting
  • Receptivity to paints, colors, pigments or other surface treatments
  • Safe for human use, non-toxic

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Cross-industrial material solutions
    • Metals and alloys
    • Composites
    • Polymer solutions
    • Metal-infused polymers
    • Silicone-based materials
    • Coatings, films and surface treatments
    • Engineered materials
  • Solutions that can be applied through novel methods such as spraying or painting
  • Computational solutions supported by proof of concept capabilities

Approaches not of interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Solutions that are not environmentally-friendly, such as heavy metals
  • Solutions that require welding or brazing to complete the seal
  • Solutions that require ongoing or regular maintenance

Appropriate responses will use the Response Form and address the following:

  • High level, non-confidential, description of proposed technology including:
    • Working principle or knowledge base to support your approach
    • Availability of technical data
    • Technology maturity (concept, prototype, ready to commercialize, commercialized)
  • Pathway to industrial scale including timing, estimated budget, and capacity for manufacture
  • Estimated cost of technology (if available)
  • Position on intellectual property including patent references
  • Desired relationship with sponsor
  • Team description and related experience

APPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO THIS REQUEST

Responses from companies (small to large), academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, or inventors are welcome. For example:

You represent a manufacturer or supplier of ductile materials with a commercially available material that should provide a watertight solution for testing in the intended application

You represent an organization with a novel material and the engineering capabilities to support development and scale-up that can provide samples ready for testing and prototyping.

You represent an organization with technology that should provide a solution but that requires further research and development to ready it for transfer to commercial use.
