RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global consumer product manufacturer, invites proposals for technologies that permit rapid, non-contact separation, orientation, and delivery of silicone gaskets to the pockets of a rotating drum.

Background

NineSigma’s client utilizes a silicone gasket in its products. These gaskets are sticky, statically charged & susceptible to deformation. Additionally, the o-ring has a central channel which necessitates preferential orientation. Please see the schematic below for gasket dimensions

 

In order to make use of the gasket, bags of 500 gaskets are added to a hopper for separation and manual orientation. These o-rings are prone to sticking to the walls of the hopper and each other. From the hopper, the rings proceed along a short conveyer to the rotating turret for insertion.

 

While NineSigma’s client is primarily interested in comprehensive technologies to separate, orient and transfer the o-rings to the drum, partial solutions focused on a single aspect of the process are still welcome.

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1

  • Client evaluation of responses & identification of potential partners: late 2017

Phase 2

  • Client evaluates proposed technologies prior to implementation: Q1 2018

Phase 3

  • Technology(ies) selected and installed in client facility: Q2/Q3 2018

 

Criteria for Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

Client will consider for advancement an approach that meets performance criteria with acceptable economics and pathway to commercialization.

 

Commercialized technology is of most interest, however earlier stage technology will be considered provided that a clear path and acceptable timetable to commercialization exist.

 

Technologies that provide the full functionality are of greatest interest.

 

 

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology must:

  • Separate silicone gaskets AND / OR
  • Correctly align the gaskets in the desired orientation
  • Deliver the gaskets to the rotating drum at a rate of 500 pieces / minute with 100% accuracy

 

Possible Approaches

NineSigma’s client is open to all technological approaches capable of delivering the desired performance.

 

Approaches not of interest

  • Solutions which require manual intervention
  • Solution which cannot deliver desired accuracy
