Hydrogel Materials with Prolonged Antioxidant Properties
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Global Leader in medical devices and specializing in hydrogel materials, invites proposals for technologies that can impart antioxidant properties to hydrogel polymers.


Oxidative stress induces lipid peroxidation on the surfaces of medical devices that adsorb lipids to their surfaces. These lipid peroxidases (LPOs) are suspected of detrimental effects in the surrounding tissues. Some examples of LPOs include lipid hydroperoxides and their secondary products (aldehydes and oxidative stress markers such as malondialdehyde, propanol, hexanal, and 4-hydroxynonenal.


The RFP sponsor is seeking innovations that prevent, minimize, or mediate oxidation at the surface of a hydrogel polymer for up to 16 hours or more. Ideally, the proposed technology will provide antioxidant properties for up to one month. 


Key Success Criteria

The technology must:

  • Prevent, minimize, or mediate lipid peroxidation on the surface of a hydrogel polymer for up to 16 hours, and preferably up to 4 weeks in an aqueous environment.
  • Be transparent (have high light transmissibility) at body temperature.
  • Be biocompatible and non-toxic
  • Technology must remain potent after storage of hydrogel in aqueous media, and should not change chemical/physical properties of hydrogel as well as the attributes mentioned above.


Preferred features

  • Be capable of withstanding high temperature processing, including autoclaving (NOTE: this specification is based on the currently established method for processing medical device materials. Innovations that do not require autoclaving for sterilization will be considered for this RFP)
  • Hydrogel surface should be hydrophilic and wettable


Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • New monomer with antioxidant properties
  • Hydrogel polymer material innovations with antioxidant properties
  • Additives and coatings for hydrogel polymer substrates
  • Surface modifications that address the requirements listed here, i.e. not simply antifouling approaches
  • Controlled release systems
  • Systems (i.e. material + rinse or recharging mechanism) that achieves the desired results
