RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global manufacturer, seeks partners to develop highly magnetic, highly tough amorphous or nano-crystalline materials for use in motor stator.

Background

The global manufacturer, a NineSigma client, has an interest in amorphous and nano-crystalline materials as stator materials to achieve high efficient motors.

Due to being thin and rigid, these materials take longer to be processed, compared to the electrical steel which is widely used as a stator core material. Especially, using a nano-crystalline material requires heating treatment to improve its magnetic properties, which will result in embrittled material.

The client itself has sought technologies that may help to solve this issue, but has not discovered any promising technologies so far. Believing that potentially promising solution provider would exist somewhere in the world, the client has issued this open request throughout the world.

 

In addition to such material development, technologies even in concept-level are welcome to improve processing efficiency of amorphous or nano-crystalline materials that are difficult to be treated due to being thin and rigid.

 

Key Success Criteria

Development goal of the technology

In case of developing highly magnetic, highly tough amorphous or nano-crystalline materials:

  • Magnetic properties
    • Saturation magnetic flux density: 1.8 T or more
    • Coercivity: Several A/m or less
  • Toughness
    • Able to be processed by press working
  • Thickness
    • As thick as possible (e.g. 0.25 mm), to improve productivity

In case of improving the efficiency of processing amorphous or nano-crystalline materials:

  • Can process (e.g. cutting → heating → laminating → fixing) thin amorphous or nano-crystalline material of several 10 µm thick at a same speed as usual press working
    • Processing speed: laminating and fixing raw materials of 200 mm in diameter at a speed of 0.6 mm/sec. or more

 

Possible Approaches

The client expects, for example, the following technologies but other approaches are widely welcome (concept-level proposals are acceptable).

  • Amorphous or nano-crystalline materials having better magnetic properties without heating treatment
  • Amorphous or nano-crystalline materials that are not embrittled even if they are heated to improve their magnetic properties
  • High-speed processing technology that can perform a series of process (cutting → heating → laminating → fixing) for amorphous or nano-crystalline material

      • Processing speed (assuming the laminating and fixing raw materials of 200 mm in diameter)
  • Sample provision/processing conditions (NDA yes/no, cost, lead time, amount/size etc.)
  • Challenges and development plans to achieve the required performance
  • Past performance (additional information exhibiting your research & development capabilities, such as research articles and patents)

 

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select the best candidate(s) through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute non-disclosure agreements (NDA) with selected respondent(s), seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreement(s) with the selected respondent(s) and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
