RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global consumer product company, invites proposals for technologies capable of deactivating naturally-occurring nitrosamines during processing and storage.

Background

Nitrosamines are compounds that are produced naturally by a variety of products, including plants, processed meats and other products. These compounds have the potential for serious negative health impacts.

 

Nitrosamine formation can occur on the surface as well as internally inside cells. Additionally, the levels of these compounds can increase during storage or during the production cycle.

 

NineSigma’s client processes nearly 800 million pounds of base material annually into a consumable product. Consequently, a mechanism, such as photo-deactivation of the nitrosamine compounds, to treat the material is highly desirable. Treatment may occur after the initial processing stage, prior to storage or both.

 

Conceptual technologies, as well as more established approaches, are of interest for this request.

 

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1 – Proof of concept

  • Lab scale proof of nitrosamine deactivation

 

Phase 2 – Commercial development

  • Industrial evaluation of nitrosamine deactivation technology

 

Criteria for Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

Client will consider for advancement an approach that meets performance criteria with acceptable economics and pathway to commercialization.

 

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Deactivate the nitrosamine compounds OR
  • Reduce the amount of nitrosamine present within the base material
  • Deactivate the microorganisms that mediate nitrosamine formation

 

Possible Approaches

NineSigma’s client is open to all approaches with the ability to reduce or eliminate the production of nitrosamines.

 

Approaches not of interest

Any technology which negatively impacts the integrity of the base materials.
